Dog Husbandry & Exercise

Exercising Your Service Dog

(Be Aware Of The Risks With All Inside Activities)

It is important for your dog to receive daily exercise, especially when outdoor activities are limited. Indoor exercise helps stimulate both your dog’s physical and mental well-being. It also provides a great opportunity to bond with your dog and strengthen the relationship between you—the pack leader—and your dog. We suggest the following indoor activities:
  • If you are fortunate enough to have a two-story home in Florida, have your dog safely go up and down the stairs.
  • Play hide-and-seek using a quail-scented bumper.
  • Have your dog work for its food or treats while practicing obedience drills.
  • Practice retrieving exercises indoors.
  • Use a treadmill designed for dogs, if available and appropriate.
  • Play tug-of-war to build engagement and focus.
These activities help keep your dog active, mentally engaged, and connected to you, even when outside exercise is limited.

Caring for Your Dog is the Owner’s Responsibility

Good at-home care strengthens your bond with your dog and can make veterinary visits less stressful. Grooming your dog yourself is not only a great way to connect, but it can also save money. Many routine grooming tasks are simple with a little patience and practice—so why not use that time to build a closer relationship with your pet?

Helpful Tips for Home Grooming:

Brushing: Prevents matting and reduces shedding.

Bathing: Use gentle, dog-specific shampoos to protect their skin.

Nail Trimming: Essential for your dog’s comfort—practice makes perfect.

Ear Cleaning: Gently clean the outer ear to help prevent infections.

Teeth Brushing: Dental care is just as important as overall health.

By taking responsibility for these tasks, you help keep your dog healthy, comfortable, and happy—while strengthening the special bond you share.
